Holiday Cookie Contest
cookiesEvery year around holiday time, Hallmark Magazine runs a story about the cookies we all make this time of year to give to family and friends. It's called "Good Enough to Give," and features recipes from real people, with real stories to tell about their cookies. Check out this year's cookies along with over 100 other cookie recipes, as well as tips on running a cookie exchange.

This year, we are also running a Cookie Contest to find more recipes from real people. If you have a cookie that you bake (especially at holiday time or that you give as gifts) that has a personal story behind it, then you should enter the contest.

Recipe of the Week: Savory Fruit & Nut Stuffing
Looking for a new stuffing recipe? This one is very straightforward and brings some important nutrients into play by using whole-grain bread. The nuts used were cashews (which I love because they have a rich sweetness to them), but you could use just about any nut in their place.

The fruit in the title refers to mixed dried fruit: I used golden raisins, cranberries and chopped apricots, but you could take this in tons of different directions. For example, how about these fruit matchups:

• pear + dark raisin + golden raisin
• peach + cranberry + apple
• mango + pear + apple
• pineapple + pear + fig
• apple + pear + cherry
• nectarine + pineapple + dark raisin
• golden raisin + fig + apple

Edge-y Brownies
brownie pansI've run across two examples (as you can see at left) of peculiar brownie pans whose stated purpose is to create more crispy edges for brownies. I'm a middle-of-the-pan gal, myself, because I actually favor soft, fudge-y brownies.

However, clearly there are those who don't agree with me. For the edge-of-the-pan brownie folks, here are your choices.

The Slice Solutions Brownie Edge Pan (top) has a grid that you put in the 11 x 17-inch pan once you've poured in the batter. Once baked, you remove the grid and are left with 18 perfectly cut brownies (with crispy edges). It sells for $19.95 from cooking.com.

Another way to get more edge is with the Baker's Edge Nonstick Edge Brownie Pan (bottom). This 9 x 13.5-inch heavy-gauge, cast-aluminum pan just increases the number of edges. It sells for $34.95 from amazon.com.

Sewing the Thanksgiving bird
turkey lacing toolI remember my mother and grandmother struggling to lace up the turkey on Thanksgiving. They used long metal pins to "pin" the flaps of skin together over the stuffing-filled cavity. Then they ran kitchen string around the pins (kind of like lacing up your ice skates) to keep the turkey closed, thus keeping the stuffing moist.

I have not carried on this tradition, because it seems like such a giant hassle. I usually stick a slice of bread at the end of the cavity, which is the lazy person's solution to the lacing problem.

However, I would be willing to reconsider this position if I had this little gizmo called TheFoodLoop Lace. It's a 22-inch length of heat-resistant silicone (good up to 675°F) with a stainless steel needle at one end. You sew up the turkey, leaving the needle in place. Once the bird is cooked, you remove it, wash it (it's dishwasher safe) and store it until you need it again.

It sells for $10 from fusionbrands.
