Baked
Matt Lewis & Renato Poliafito

baked barI’ve been having a hard time staying put at my desk during the recent bright and sunny days and while I am thankful that we get plenty of sunlight in our office, I’m even more thankful that one of my considerate coworkers brought us chocolate and vanilla Whoopie Pies from Baked yesterday! I mean seriously, I know I am prone to going on and on about one food item or another that I just love, but these are the BEST treats EVER.

Here’s the scoop. Matt and Renato opened the bakery in Red Hook out in Brooklyn in 2005 and call it their “ode to a perfect bakery”. And while I will admit that I have not been there—Lisa, my nice coworker lives nearby and treats us pretty regularly—a trip is on my to-do list. I just worry I will overdo it if I’m actually face to face with their display counters…

Anyway, they opened Baked as a collaboration—Matt owned Chocolate Bar, a sweet chocolate shop/café in the West Village and Renato dreamed of opening a coffee shop and together the two friends made this happen. They sell deliciously straightforward brownies, bars, cookies, cakes, whoopee pies (they have special seasonal flavors, like a pumpkin spice variety in the fall which is also heavenly), and cupcakes, among other goodies. Check out their website if you aren’t in the area because they mail order a handful of their products, like their bakedbar (pictured above) which is a combination of coconut, chocolate, walnuts, butterscotch and milk on a graham cracker crust. It sounds like trouble to me!
