Mug Magic
Post by Kate Slate
Mug MagicOK, I really don't understand the science of this mug, but it completely fascinates me. When the mug is empty (or when it has a cold liquid in it), it's a black mug with white letters that read COLD. But if you fill it with a hot liquid, the mug turns white (???!?), and the letters, which say HOT, are black.

As the level of your hot liquid goes down, the top turns back to its original black.

Like I said, I don't get it, but I want to get one. They go for $25 from Charles & Marie.

Recipe of the Week: Three-Pepper Goat Cheese Canapes
Post by Kate Slate
I'm a sucker for a pinwheel appetizer: Even though I know how easy they are to make, they still impress me.

This week's recipe is for an appetizer made with goat cheese, green bell pepper, plum tomatoes and a bit of jalapeno pepper, all rolled up in flour tortillas and then thinly sliced crosswise. The end result is a pinwheel with a green and red mosaic of vegetables.

What really lifts this from snack to party-worthy appetizer, though, is the goat cheese. Certainly there are those out there who are not fans (and you can use whipped cream cheese to appease them, if you'd like), but anyone who likes goat cheese usually *loves* goat cheese.

So for the goat cheese lovers among you, I've listed a couple of other goat cheese-based appetizers in case you really want to go crazy.

Wine Ice Creams
Post by Kate Slate
Wine Ice CreamsHave you ever been carded when you tried to buy an ice cream cone? Probably not...unless you have had the pleasure of buying one of the wine-flavored ice creams from Mercer's Dairy. The ice creams are made with real wine and because of the alcohol content (5 percent by volume), you have to be 21 to buy them.

Mercer's Dairy, located in Boonville, New York (in the Adirondacks), is owned by a collaborative of local dairy farmers. Their wine ice cream line (they make conventional ice creams, too) currently has 6 flavors: A la Port, Peach White Zinfandel, Red Raspberry Chardonnary, Royal White Riesling, Cherry Merlot and Chocolate Cabernet.

If you happen to be near Boonville, you can buy the ice cream in their store, but they have an increasing presence in retail locations. You can visit Mercer's Dairy for more information, or you can email them at mercersdairy@gmail.com to inquire about a retail store near you.

Recipe of the Week: Rosy Tuna & Potato Salad with Watercress
Post by Kate Slate
Start with a nice Yukon Gold potato salad (with beets for a touch of sweetness and color) and add some protein to elevate it to a main course. If you don't like tuna, here are some other sources of protein you could add in its place:

• 3/4 pound smoked turkey, diced
• 12 ounces baked tofu, cubed
• 3/4 pound cooked shrimp, diced
• 1/2 pound Black Forest ham, diced, plus 1/2 cup canned white beans
• 4 ounces goat cheese plus 1/3 cup toasted slivered almonds
• 1 pound rotisserie chicken, skinned and shredded
• 3 hard-boiled eggs, coarsely chopped, plus 3/4 cup cooked lentils
• 1-1/2 cups canned chickpeas
• 3/4 pound roast turkey, shredded
• 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, cubed, plus 1/2 cup canned black beans
